We had a very nice stay in Peñíscola on our way from Granada to Barcelona.
An impregnable castle sitting on a rock jutting out into the blue Mediterranean sea, beautiful beaches, a Pope and a movie, what's not to like!
This was one of the settings for the movie El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren with Peñíscola doubling as Valencia. The setting has also featured in Game of Thrones.
The beaches are fantastic and stretch for miles. You can see Charlton Heston riding his horse along the beach in one of the scenes from the movie.
At a time of great unrest in Catholicism, Pope Benedict XIII made Peñíscola his home for 8 years in the 15th century. There were two other Popes at the time so there were clearly some disagreements within the church.
Go see the castle built (mostly) by the Knights Templar between 1294 - 1307. The Templars were a Christian military order founded to protect pilgrims heading to the Holy Land.
This is a great spot to stay!
